I’m sharing the Territorial Seeds Co. greens I’m going to grow for fall and let you in on a secret of seed ordering.

Wait, starting a garden in fall?

Many gardeners are wrapping up their growing season right about this time in August when I’m talking about starting a new garden. That’s often because most of us, at least here in the United States, think of garden vegetables as mostly belonging to the warm-season crops like tomatoes, squash, and beans.

But we eat vegetables all year long! With a little planning it’s possible to grow a year-round garden in many climates. One of the strategies is to choose seeds for plants that do well in the fall/winter season when the weather is colder and there is less sunlight.

Why grow so many greens?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten about gardening is this: grow what you like to eat. Me and my friends and family love eating leafy green vegetables. Fortunately, these do very well in the fall garden. Here’s three more reasons to grow your own greens:

  • There are just a few varieties of greens you can buy at the grocery store, whereas there are hundreds you can grow at home.

  • Often grocery store produce travels hundreds of miles and there is much waste along the supply chain; growing your own helps reduce this waste and fossil fuel use.

  • The less time between harvest and eating, the greater the nutrient value. Nothing can beat the time from harvesting in your own yard.

What’s your favorite green to grow?
