(Video) How to Make a Winecap Mushroom Bed

Watch How to Create a Mushroom Bed on YouTube.

An introduction to building a simple mushroom bed with supplies on-hand. I also touch on growing mushrooms in a raised garden bed and inside using a kit.

Why Winecaps?

We love wild foraging for mushrooms and have always wanted to grow our own, so this fall seemed like a great time to start. Winecaps are supposedly one of the easiest to grow at home, and they can’t easily be found at market. We had plenty of straw and wood, a great spot and so all we needed was the mushroom ‘seed’ called spawn.

We purchased our spawn from a company called Field and Forest Products. We got a 5 pound bag, which is mostly hardwood sawdust filled with mycelium, the vegetative part of a fungus.

We built up the bed with a variety of materials the fungi can consume. It should take about 2 - 10 months for us to see (hopefully) some tasty mushrooms!

Have you ever grown mushrooms?
