What does it mean to shop by the seasons in homesteading?

What we mean when we say shopping by the seasons is to buy produce that generally in season in your area at the time of purchase.

Why is it important to shop by the seasons of the homesteader?

There are so many reasons that it's important to shop by the seasons. But let's first talk about the one that's on everyone's mind these days which is the cost of food. It just keeps going up. You can often save money by buying food that in season for your area.

Here's why: All of the costs associated with producing produce get passed on in the consumer. So if the farm to market supply chain is shorter, and fewer modes of transportation are required, then the consumer is going to ay less.

When you shop by seasons, it also means that your food's going to be fresher. And if you're eating fresher food, it not only tastes better it also has higher nutritional value.

How do you shop by the seasons for your homestead?

For the most part, when you walk into a modern supermarket you can find just about anything you want at any time of year. So it's not immediately obvious which items are in season. The good news is it's pretty easy to figure it out with just a little bit of research. A quick internet search will turn up lists or websites that will share this information.

Another way to figure out what's in season for you locally is to take a close look at the price tags each time you're at the grocery store. In general things will be lower in cost when they're in season. They will also often tell you where something was grown, and things that are grown closer to home are generally more likely to be in season for you at that time.

When you shop by the seasons, you'll be well on your way to becoming a homesteader.

So here it is your Quick Tip of the Day.

Shop by the seasons. In modern grocery stores most produce is available year round. When you start focusing on what's in season you are more likely to save money and get fresher locally produced items.
