Our version of pizza night has evolved as we have adapted to meet our health challenges and create something special for weekend nights when our homestead is far from the nearest delivery or take-out. Even if you are just getting started with cooking from scratch and there’s a pizza joint around the corner, you might still fall in love with this quick and simple recipe.
What Ingredients do I need?
We know that recipes usually give you precise amounts of ingredients. With pizza night and homesteading in general, things, things are a little more flexible. Sometimes this feels like freedom and sometimes it feels stressful. When we first started, it was definitely the latter. But as we’ve been doing this every Saturday night for many months, it’s become a source of creative inspiration. We invite you to think of cooking as an adventure that is constantly evolving…And if you are worried it’s not going to turn out, maybe have a frozen pizza ready for back-up?
Dough (we use homemade, but you can find fresh dough in many grocery stores). For deep dish, use more dough
Flour (for working the dough)
Olive Oil
Shredded Cheese
Pizza Sauce
Flaky Salt
Garlic Granules
Toppings (in this video we use Mama Lil’s Peppers, sliced olives, red onions, and veggie pepperoni)
What equipment do I need?
Here’s a list of items we have ready and waiting to use for cast iron pizza, but this list can be easily modified depending upon what you have available.
Cast Ion Pan (We found this one in a junk shop and restored it)
Stove and Oven
Oven Mit
Oven Mit
Tongs (optional)
Pastry Brush
Pizza Cutter
Fork
Spoon
How do I put it together?
We usually turn the oven on while prepping the ingredients, allowing it plenty of time for the unit to heat up. The highest setting for our oven is 500° - we recommend you choose your highest setting.
Place the cast iron pan over a burner and turn to a medium high setting. While the pan is heating, prep the rest of the items.
Sprinkle flour on the cutting board and put the dough on top.
Line up the rest of the ingredients next to the pan, in the order you will use them.
Shape the dough. We use a combination of stretching and pulling. The goal is to shape the dough to roughly the size of your pan. If the dough tears or develops thin spots, just fold and pinch the dough before shaping again. This is less of a problem if you like deep-dish.
Pour olive oil into the hot pan. Use a pastry brush to spread it around the bottom and sides of the pan.
Place the dough in the hot pan.
Spread a bit of olive oil over the dough with the pastry brush.
Sprinkle garlic granules and flaky salt over the dough, focusing on the edges.
Spoon pizza sauce onto the dough. In general, we’ve found that less is more when it comes to sauce. Too much can make the dough soggy.
We add toppings next (you could go with cheese. It just depends upon your preference)
Cover with cheese.
Using the oven mitt, transfer the pan to oven.
Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
Transfer to cutting board and let cool for a couple minutes.
Cut and enjoy!
Well there you have it, our Saturday pizza tradition with a homestead twist.
